Content Strategy

Content strategy is all about having the right content, at the right time, getting it to the right person, and at the right place. This is one of the things I have learned while watching, “Foundations of UX: Content Strategy “ on Lynda.com.  Another aspect of content strategy learned from this video is that there is no real specific way to go about creating content.  According to the speaker in the video,  Morten Rand-Hendriksen,  states, “content strategy has no particular method.”  He mentions that everything within content is interconnected. No matter where you start, you have to circle back, because all the work you have done or will do will circle back and affect all of the work you have previously done. When thinking of content strategy as a ball going down a path is a much smoother process, and it flows a lot easier.

When beginning to create your message in your content, strategist Erin Kissane says there are three processes to follow: evaluate, design, and execute.

Evaluation is the beginning where you research and analyze.  The design phase means you are planning and structuring your content.  The final stage is executing where you are actually creating and publishing your content.  No matter what you have done, you will circle back which leads to key driving questions when you are creating and developing content. Every layer of your content strategy depends on the other layer to make the ball roll smoothly. If one layer fails, all of your content layers will fail along with it. Therefore, your ball isn’t going to roll.

The last thing that has resonated with me throughout the video was defining your authentic voice and tone. It confuses the audience, and they will become confused with who you are as a person. They will begin to think you have multiple identities, or even a thousand style guides. It is important to remain consistent within your voice and tone, especially as a journalist.

One thing I want to know more about is Style Guides. From the start of my degree program, I have always made a blast making mood boards for my personal brand and other assignments that are similar. I never knew it could be made into an actual career making these. I would really enjoy learning how to become more advanced and credible within this part of the industry. I will be able to use these techniques within future projects, as well as careers.
